Black History – Rosa Parks

Black History – Rosa Parks

In Class 2 we explored the life of Rosa Parks. We discussed how she made a monumental change to the black community through one simple act of bravery and defiance; it was profound, courageous and life-changing. As a class, we discussed equality and what it might mean to have different colour skin in 1950s America. We also talked about segregation and how it might feel to live and work in a society where you are treated differently purely because of the colour of your skin. From these discussions, we created acrostic poems.

Rosa Parks carried over to our Art lessons too; we looked a little bit at the Pop Art movement, as it emerged during the mid-to-late 1950s- around the same time as Rosa Parks made a stand for the black community. Combining the two ideas together, Class 2 used oil pastels to recreate a piece of Artwork of Rosa Parks based on the style of Andy Warhol. To create our final masterpiece, we tried to emulate his use of colour and repeated images to make a bold statement; as Rosa Parks did.
