Dunswell’s RE Rationale
At Dunswell, we follow the East Riding Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education (SACRE) Agreed Syllabus. The coverage of the syllabus ensures that RE in schools provokes challenging questions about meaning and purpose, beliefs about God, ultimate questions, issues of right and wrong and what it means to follow various faiths.
In RE children learn about and from religions and worldviews in local, national and global contexts, to discover, explore and consider different answers to these questions. They learn to weigh up the value of wisdom from different sources, to develop and express their insights in response, and to agree or disagree respectfully.

Intent
The RE curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:
• Know about and understand a range of religions and worldviews: Teaching will equip pupils with systematic knowledge and understanding of a range of religions and worldviews, enabling them to develop their ideas,
values and identities;
• Express ideas and insights about the nature, significance and impact of religions and worldviews: It should develop in pupils an aptitude for dialogue so that they can participate positively in our society with its diverse religions and worldviews. They learn to articulate clearly and coherently their personal beliefs, ideas, values and experiences while respecting the right of others to differ.
• Gain and deploy the skills needed to engage seriously with religions and worldviews: Pupils should gain and deploy the skills needed to understand, interpret and evaluate texts, sources of wisdom and authority and other evidence.

All teaching staff use the Dunswell progressive curriculum documents to plan their units of learning. This alongside the progressive SACRE documents ensures that progression for all is in place. Staff are advised of any changes within the RE curriculum and we are currently planning for the changes to the agreed syllabus which come into place in September 2022. Resources are available in school and we are able to pool resources with other schools in the Trust where appropriate.

Implementation
In Key Stage One children will receive 38 hours of RE each year. This could be delivered in weekly, one or sessions or as a block unit depending on the teacher. In Key Stage Two children will receive 45 hours of RE each year. Again, this can be delivered as a weekly session or blocked unit.

All staff feel very confident in the teaching and delivery of RE units. Where needed, the RE subject lead is available and able to share knowledge and advice. Subject knowledge is strong for all staff and suing the progressive curriculum, we are able to ensure that children are constantly building on their prior knowledge. In RE children learn about and from religions and worldviews in local, national and global contexts, to discover, explore and consider different answers to these questions. Children learn to weigh up the value of wisdom from different sources, to develop and express their insights in response, and to agree or disagree respectfully. Tasks to assess children’s understanding are creative and used to ensure that children can achieve the learning objectives of the session.

RE is well received across school and can be in seen in lessons as well as weekly assembly focuses. Where required, resources are used to enhance the children’s learning opportunities.

Impact
RE will contribute dynamically to children’s education in schools by provoking challenging questions about meaning and purpose in life, beliefs about God, ultimate reality, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human. Teaching will equip pupils with systematic knowledge and understanding of a range of religions and worldviews, enabling them to develop their ideas, values and identities. It will develop in pupils an aptitude for dialogue so that they can participate positively in our society with its diverse religions and worldviews. Pupils will gain and deploy the skills needed to understand, interpret and evaluate texts, sources of wisdom and authority and other evidence.

Children will learn to articulate clearly and coherently their personal beliefs, ideas, values and experiences while respecting the right of others to differ. Teachers will use the objectives on Scholarpack to continually assess all children in RE which they will then use to support their future learning and any support which may be required.
